Overview

Biozipcode, Inc. is working to bring Biozipcode technology into real-world medical applications, based on research being conducted at the Department of Life Intelligence and Bioinformatics, an industry–academia joint research program at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine.

One of the major challenges in disease treatment is that drugs do not always act only where they are needed. Even when a drug has strong therapeutic potential, it may also affect normal cells and tissues, leading to side effects. For patients, these side effects can become a significant physical burden and may sometimes make it difficult to continue treatment.

Our approach is based not only on how a drug works, but also on which cells it is delivered to. By using Biozipcode technology, we aim to develop a new form of drug discovery in which therapeutic agents can be delivered more selectively to disease-related cells and tissues, with the goal of reducing side effects as much as possible.

Technology that Identifies Cells and Delivers Therapeutic Agents to the Right Place

Biozipcode technology is a cell-targeting technology designed to recognize the characteristics of specific cells and tissues and deliver drugs or functional molecules to the intended location.

Conventional drugs often spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. As a result, they may act not only on the target lesion, but also on normal tissues. Biozipcode technology takes a different approach. It identifies peptide sequences that preferentially bind to disease-related cells or specific tissue environments, and uses them much like an “address” within the body.

Through this mechanism, it may become possible to deliver therapeutic agents more selectively to the places where they are needed. This is expected to enhance therapeutic efficacy while minimizing the impact on normal tissues.

Applications in Diabetes, Cancer, and Intractable Diseases

One of the areas in which we are placing particular emphasis is the development of new therapeutic approaches for diabetes and diabetic complications.

Diabetes is not only a matter of blood glucose control. Over time, it can damage various tissues throughout the body, including the kidneys, blood vessels, nerves, and retina. At the Department of Life Intelligence and Bioinformatics at Kyoto University, research is being conducted to analyze the cells and tissue changes involved in the pathology of diabetes and to develop new therapeutic concepts that target them.

Biozipcode technology also holds significant potential in the field of cancer treatment. While anticancer drugs can provide strong therapeutic effects, side effects caused by their impact on normal cells remain a major issue. By identifying targets that are characteristic of cancer cells or cancer tissue and delivering therapeutic agents more selectively, this technology may lead to new treatment strategies that reduce patient burden while improving therapeutic outcomes.

Beyond drug discovery, Biozipcode technology may also be applied to areas such as intractable wounds, tissue regeneration, vascular regeneration, and scaffolds for regenerative medicine. As a technology that helps guide cells and tissues in the right direction, it has the potential to be developed across a wide range of medical fields.

Bringing University Research into Real-World Medicine

The role of Biozipcode, Inc. is to take research discoveries born in the university setting and develop them into medical technologies that can ultimately reach patients.

This means translating findings from basic research into diagnostics, therapeutics, regenerative medicine, and drug delivery technologies that can be used in clinical practice. To achieve this, research and development alone are not enough. Manufacturing, quality control, intellectual property, regulatory strategy, and clinical application must all be considered from an early stage.

Building on our collaboration with the Department of Life Intelligence and Bioinformatics at Kyoto University, we will continue working to implement Biozipcode technology in society and contribute to the realization of safer, less burdensome treatments for patients.
